Lishe Ya Damu

Welcome

Our History

BoxAid Charity was formerly known as Lishe Ya Damu in Kiswahili, a Bantu language spoken in the African Great Lake Regions and other parts of East and Southern Africa. When directly translated it means “nutrition for the blood”. BoxAid is an international NGO committed to improving the quality of lives of indigents while protecting our planet, earth. Our founder, Katriel Kartel, orphaned at the tender age of seven, was inspired to form our organisation to prevent indigents and vulnerable people across the globe from facing similar life struggles that she faced as an orphan. Her travails as a young orphan. l gave her a drive to rescue humanity from societal ills such as poverty and homelessness, and to improve the quality of lives of the impoverished and terminally ill.

Kartriel’s first humanitarian act was giving her lunch to a street child she found searching the bin for food when she was just 8 years old. She felt fulfilled after this act and became determined to carry out further humanitarian acts in her community. At the young age of eight, she focused on tackling one of the main issues in the community which was poor nutrition. She learned that nutritional foods combat sickness, diseases and malnutrition amongst other challenges; and so found a way to acquire nutritional foods at affordable prices which she used to feed thousands.

Katriel went off on another mission – taking indigents and vulnerable people off the streets in countries and sponsoring their medical treatment at government hospitals in these communities. When they are confirmed healthy by the hospitals, she partnered with local artisans such as automobile mechanics, bricklayers, plumbers and electricians to provide shelter for them and teach them skills and trade in exchange for clothing, household items and food ingredients which were recycled or purchased at affordable prices. She also accommodated some of them, taught them domestic skills such as cooking, housekeeping, baby sitting and gardening, and helped them secure employment when they mastered these skills. For the terminally ill, she provided with palliative care until their passing.

Over the years, BoxAid has grown to a team of professionals and volunteers, spurred by a common passion for humanity and committed to improving the quality of lives of indigents and vulnerable persons in communities while also protecting the environment from harmful waste disposal practices.

We adopted a multi-pronged approach to achieving this mission which involves, feeding and clothing the poor with recycled items and profits made from selling recycled items, empowering homeless and impoverished persons by equipping them with skills, supporting terminally ill persons with palliative care.

BACKGROUND: WHO WE ARE AND HOW WE CAME TO BE BOXAID

BoxAid is an international organisation dedicated to assisting humanity while tackling environmental issues facing our world. We are a team of like minded people that share a passion for the quality of lives of the helpless, impoverished and abandoned in communities across the world. The name BoxAid came from the idea of providing an all round service to all types of people with any type of need- from food to empowerment. (From life to death). The vision is being “boxed in humanity” where we are all unified under the same umbrella in our humanitarian initiative. Each member of our team has their own story, of hardships and experiences that have led them to BoxAid’s cause- one that is held together by empathy. We, therefore, strive to do our part in helping struggling individuals work to a self-sustaining lifestyle where they can meet their basic needs and find meaning in life. We believe that we can move far as society when no one is left behind. (Please formulate this better Basic needs that was taught to us in school as being food, shelter and clothing).

BoxAid is passionate about building bridges between tribes and people to create communities to help and support each other. To stamp out economic migration by empowering people in their own communities. To create a cycle of sustenance amongst themselves as individuals, families and communities.

We also understand the relevance the environment plays in the rehabilitation of the human race. Of what use is it to bring people back into a community where the environment is failing to support them because it has been affected by human activities. At Box Aid we believe in partnering with the environment through taking mindful acts of protecting the environment and doing our best to promote environmentally friendly activities that restore nature. Partnering with the environment pushes us to reduce the implications of climate change. We at Box Aid strive to incorporate the 3Rs; Reduce wastes, reuse waste, recycle waste by rescuing goods bound to end up in landfills and finding a purposeful use for them. It could be waste to another person but is of value to another person. Please add something about climate change being and one of the main objectives ( also boxed in BoxAid is humanities dwelling place Mother Earth that BoxAid strives to aid by means of rescuing goods bound for landfills that we recycle, reuse, reduce and added to this great British value we repurpose).
